This professional development offers hands-on field studies in water quality, aquatic macroinvertebrates and opportunities to study the rich geologic history of the area.

During the PD we camp at Sage Creek primitive camp ground that has a vault toilet but no running water or electricity. The event is partially outfitted which means meals are provided by an experienced back country cook and we bring in the water while participants provide their own gear. A limited amount of camping gear is available for a small rental fee. No camping experience required but a sense of adventure is!

This PD is geared towards teachers and informal educators that serve upper elementary, middle/high school and undergraduate learners. K-2 educators may attend after consulting with the instructor. The experience is open to educators from all content areas with the expectation that you will participate in all activities. Teams of teachers from the same school are encouraged to attend.
Bring research happening here in South Dakota to your classrooms through hands-on lesson plans. Dr. Chris Anderson of the USD Biology Department researches chameleon feeding and has partnered with the South Dakota Discovery Center and educators to bring his research to the classroom. Chameleons make great phenomena for learning about force, energy, habitats, adaptations and more!

This hybrid professional development is a practicum, meaning that part of the learning time is to implement and reflect upon one of the lessons. We will meet for one day together to learn from Dr. Anderson and the team. Participants will implement one or more of the lesson in their classrooms by early December. We will reconvene in December for a share-out of what worked, what to change and what to add.
